WE LOVE CAMP READ-A-LOT!!!

Camp Read-A-Lot was a success!!! We had such a fun day!  The students came in this morning with all of their camping “gear”, did their morning jobs, and began working on their Camp Read-A-Lot Fun Book. We cleaned up after morning announcements and gathered around the camp fire where we had our Morning Meeting. At Morning Meeting we  did a  fire greeting, shared exciting news,  sang some camping songs. When our meeting concluded, we decorated camp hats and built our tents. Soon after we settled into our tents, our mystery readers arrived! Mrs. Farrell’s kindergarteners joined us  in our tents and buddy read with us. Before we headed to P.E. we enjoyed S’mores on a stick . They were delicious and so fun to make! The students came back from P.E. and we shared spooky stories. After recess and lunch, we made origami t-shirts. Some students made them for Father’s Day, others made them as camp shirts. We cleaned up our tents then headed out for a scavenger hunt and ended the day with a s’more song . It was an absolutely fabulous day!

See you tomorrow for our Showcase at 1:00 in the library!

Final thoughts :)

I want to take a moment to thank you all so much for your support throughout the past two years. I have enjoyed every second spent with your children and feel incredibly blessed. I have watched the children in our classroom grow academically-coming into 1st grade knowing letter names and sounds (some not even that) to now, reading like crazy! I have watched the quietest students blossom into students who feel comfortable sharing aloud, making new friends, and being  “silly”.  I watched students learn that it is okay to make mistakes and that sometimes that is the best way to learn.

I am so very proud of all the students in our classroom and am sad to say good-bye to them on Thursday. Their futures are bright and they will do amazing things!

I am sure I will see you all next year, but please don’t be a stranger! If there is any way that I can support you in the future, please let me know.

A few reminders:
Monday: Camp Read-A-Lot—bring a flat sheet,
flashlight, and favorite books. Wear your
camping clothes.

Tuesday: 2nd Grade Showcase in the library at 1:00

Wednesday: Olympic Day—WEAR SUNSCREEN!!!

Thursday: ½ Day, COA Awards

MAP Success

Today was our first day of MAP testing. Overall, it went really well!! The students did a wonderful job and all of their scores went up from the winter! YAY! On Monday we will take the Math MAP test.

Today we began an end of the year writing gift to each other. Each student is writing to their classmates about why they are a good friends, things that they are good at, and their favorite memories with each other. What I have seen so far are incredibly sweet and will be fun to look back at down the road.

We are changing the location of our end of the year showcase. I have gotten a wonderful response from families and our classroom won’t be big enough to hold everyone! We will have our showcase in the library/media center. I will send home a note as the date gets closer. If you haven’t returned your “RSVP” please remember to do so by May 28th.

I hope you have a wonderful night!

MAP Tests Begin Tomorrow (Thursday)

Good evening-
Tomorrow is our first day of MAP testing. We will take the reading portion of the test right away in the morning. Please be sure that your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast. The goal I set for the class is that all students meet their end of the year goal. At conferences, your student’s progress on the MAP Mountain was discussed. I am very eager to see how they do!
Tomorrow is also blue or purple for the Eat the Rainbow challenge. I forgot to send today’s picture to my email, so I will post it tomorrow. Yesterday’s picture is below.

Library books are due back to school by May 24th. We are having a school-wide competition to see who can turn in all of their books first. The first class with all books returned or paid for will get a popcorn party. Please check around the house for any library books that were checked out throughout the year. A list of your child’s missing book(s), if any, will be sent home tomorrow.

I hope you have been enjoying this beautiful weather!!!

Eat the Rainbow

Today kicked off our “Eat The Rainbow” week! Students could bring in a healthy snack that was red! Tomorrow is yellow or orange!

I hope you enjoyed your “Leading Lady”/Mother’s Day gifts! The students had so much fun making them for you.

Today we practiced and reviewed Read to Self. We practiced asking questions before, while, and after we read. Students also reviewed identifying the main idea, compound words and alphabetical order. All of these skills are assessed on the Reading MAP test, which we have on Thursday

In math, we began Unit 11. Today our lesson allowed us to practice solving number stories. A lot of the questions on the Math MAP test are story problems so we practiced finding the important parts of questions.

In Science, students finished painting their wind pictures. Tomorrow, we will begin writing YOU Poems from the information we have learned about wind.

Tomorrow is going to be a warm one!!!! Be sure to get out and enjoy the sun!

Spring has Sprung!

What an eventful yet beautiful day!
This morning in Daily 5, the students reviewed what buddy reading should look like, sound like and feel like. Lately, we have struggled with checking for understanding so we took some time today to review why it is so important. We also met in our small groups and added a poem to our poetry journals.
In P.E. one of our students fell off of the equipment and broke his arm. I talked with mom at the end of the day and she said he is doing much better. Mrs. Armstrong (the PE teacher) was so impressed with the students when this happened. They rose to the occasion, listened for the directions and did exactly what they were told to do. Way to go 2nd graders!!! This group of kids is so incredibly helpful, caring and generous.
In science, we continued to learn about weather. So far we have focused on rain and snow. This week, our focus is lightning. After we read the books A Letter to Amy by Ezra Jack Keats and Water Dance by Thomas Locker, the students created their lightning pictures using the Picture Writing Process.  Tomorrow students will write I Poems about lightning.
